Head of Department: Professor Ogunlade Davidson (until 1 November 2003; thereafter Professor Kevin Bennett)

Please note that EDRC merged with the Energy Research Institute on 1 November 2003

Departmental Profile

The Energy and Development Research Centre comprises 14 researchers with multi-disciplinary backgrounds in addition to a complement of support staff. EDRC's goals are threefold:

  • To study energy and development problems in Africa and strategies for addressing these.

  • To contribute to the achievement of improved social equity, economic efficiency, and environmental sustainability in the energy sector.

  • To develop human resources to respond adequately to energy and development needs.

Recognising that energy policy must related to real experience in the energy sector, EDRC's research involves close interaction with stakeholders - including the communication of research findings and policy recommendations to those stakeholders, beyond the academic environment.

EDRC focuses on four main research areas: Energy, poverty and development, Energy efficiency and environment, Energy markets and governance, and Energy and climate change. EDRC also offers Masters teaching, and supervision to Masters and Doctoral students based in the Centre, and contributes to other training initiatives aimed at developing people for a transformed South African energy sector and African energy sector.
